La Tour Melas is a modern winemaking facility, located near the village of Achinos in central Greece. This wine-growing estate with elegant architecture is surrounded by olive groves and mountains, overlooking the Aegean Sea. After almost 15 years, the hard work, the expertise of our team of winemakers, and laborers, La Tour Melas has been able to produce one of the best red and rosé wines the Greek terroir has to offer. La Tour Melas is set in 30 hectares near the village of Achinos in central Greece, two and half hours drive north of Athens. In 2001, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot vines were imported from France and planted. Initially, a stone water cistern was constructed for irrigating the young vines. Subsequent expansion works gave rise to the tower 'La Tour Melas'. Our winery is a four-level, temperature controlled, underground structure. It is designed so that the wine flows by gravity from one step to the next, suitably leaving little need for pumps. Exposed to the winds, home to our cuvee Palies Rizes, our vineyards in Nemea with ancient clay-limestone soils hosting pre-phylloxeric vines over 112 years. Organic farming with numerous biodynamic principles are implemented to all our vineyards, and the harvest is made by hand with parcel and intra-parcel selections.
